Russula emetica

Common name: Emetic russula, The sickener
Spore Print: White
Habitat: Grows on the ground in the forest.
Edibility: Inedible
Comments: Of all the confusing russulas, this one is probably the easiest to identify: bright red cap, white stem, white gills, and red hot taste! There are many russulas that have a similar appearance but don't have the peppery taste (I tasted several that I thought were Russula emetica before I found these!) I like the taste, which tastes like hot radishes, but always spit it out. They say that in some countries this mushroom is used as a spice in certain foods. It's also used to induce vomiting!
